Walk in Beauty

There are times when it is hard to believe in the future, when are temporarily just not brave enough. When this happens, concentrate on the present. Cultivate le petite bonheur (the little happiness) until courage returns. Look forward to the beauty of the next moment, the next hour, the promise of a good meal, sleep, a book, a movie, the likelihood that tonight the stars will shine and tomorrow the sun will shine. Sink roots into the present until the strength grows to think about tomorrow.” Ardis Whitman

To Walk In Beauty is the concept that we recognize and appreciate the bounty and beauty that surrounds us, and work to live our lives walking our path in the same state of natural Grace… to accept the World as neither “good” nor “bad”, simply the World… rather like the Middle Way of Buddhist philosophy.

Walk In Beauty means to step lightly upon the Earth, to find and maintain Balance, to think first of others but to be equally kind to ourselves too. Nature understands this concept, and gives us beautiful examples all the time. But, do we take the time to recognize and appreciate them? Not enough of us do, in my opinion.

"You live like this, sheltered, in a delicate world, and you believe you are living. Then you read a book(Lady Chatterley, for instance), or you take a trip, or you talk with Richard, and you discover that you are not living, that you are hibernating.

The symptoms of hibernating are easily detectable: first, restlessness. The second symptom (when hibernating becomes dangerous and might degenerate into death): absence of pleasure. That is all. It appears like an innocuous illness.

Monotony, boredom, death. Millions live like this (or die like this) without knowing it. They work in offices. They drive a car. They picnic with their families. They raise children. And then some shock treatment takes place, a person, a book, a song, and it awakens them and saves them from death.” – Anais Nin

Man, that Anais Nin was one smart lady! I’m always uncovering new bits of her wisdom like this that feel like a bright flash within, a breathtaking moment of Illumination with a unique impact. I see so much Beauty in the World around me that I often forget entirely how how “weary, stale, flat, and unprofitable seem… all the uses of this world!” to so many people shuffling through the routine they have taught themselves.

Enjoy the warm bubbles that rise within when you laugh. Sing a little each day just because it's good for you. Wonder at the colors at sunset. Be grateful for all that you have rather than lamenting what you don't have. Let go the trespasses, annoyances, and doubts of the day and simply give yourself a few moments to breathe in contentment. Taking joy in the life you have been given to live returns positive energy to the Universe. Good moods are just as contagious as bad ones. In these ways, we can spread Light around the world.

“Though we travel the world over to find the beautiful, we must carry it with us or we find it not.” Ralph Waldo Emerson

The Majority seem to have lost faith in them selves, forgotten whatever they once held to be beautiful and worthy within them, living instead as if caught in some nightmare of boredom, resentment, anxiety, fear, anger or apathy. Our society seems to be wandering in this strange dreamstate, yearning for some unnameable cure to the ache our sleeping masses cannot seem to identify.

“A single event can awaken within us a stranger totally unknown to us. To live is to be slowly born.
” Antoine de Saint ExupĂ©ry

“It’s exhilarating to be alive in a time of awakening consciousness; it can also be confusing, disorienting, and painful.”
Adrienne Rich

Every day more Awaken amid the sleeping Majority. As we Awaken, our vision clears, our desired path becomes more evident, and the Dream comes into focus as a healthy Reality. It’s a long journey for most of us, and the temptation to fall back into our illusory sleep is always there. Ah ah ah, no snooze buttons, please!

Sometimes we fear Awakening, just as we irrationally fear Change, or grow weary in our efforts to stay Awake. Don’t worry! Have faith in your self, and the Universe! Nothing truly worth having comes easily. Just keep up the good work, and remember to hold sharp in the focus of your mind the very best you have to offer the World.

Don’t be afraid to change! Don’t be afraid to let go, and become who you are truly meant to be, to claim and bring to fruition the Divine purpose given only to you. Allow yourself to let go of who you were to make way for the person you are becoming. Most importantly, forgive yourself for the poor choices you made while sleeping, forgive the same trespass of your siblings still slumbering around you, and rejoice that every day, the Awakened come one step closer to becoming the Majority!

Mitakayue Oyasin, Beloveds

“Most people’s lives are run by desire and fear. Desire is the need to add something to yourself in order to be yourself more fully. All fear is the fear of losing something and thereby becoming diminished and being less. These two movements obscure the fact that Being cannot be given or taken away. Being in its fullness is already within you,
Now.” Eckhart Tolle

“Whatever the present moment contains, accept is as if you had chosen it. Always work with it, not against it. Make it your friend and ally, not your enemy. This will miraculously transform your whole life.” Eckhart Tolle

“You are here to enable the divine purpose of the universe to unfold. That is how important you are!” Eckhart Tolle

Sparkling Along Life's Shore

Sailing through the Oceans wide,
arms outstretched
colorful and bright,
another shimmering voice abides…

“Two- Spirited,
I come to you
Singing of Growth…
Instinct …
Adaptability…
Renewal…
Survival…
and Sensuality.

Reserve your energy.
Remember your true self.
For a single piece
may become whole again,
a renewed self,
in time.

Feast upon the bounty
that surrounds you!
Dare to swim against the tide!
Life is the reward,
just take it all in stride.

Five extensions of self
reaching out from my center
to embrace miraculous Life.
Five eyes observing
creation and destruction,
confident within my spiny skin.
Nature defies your greedy knife!

Stellar wisdom
shining in hidden pools,
Overwhelmed by restless tides.
Be true to the best within you,
and trust that you are
your brightest guide."

For those new to the game, each poem is inspired by a Teacher found in Nature; a star, stone, animal, plant etc that holds lessons of Wisdom for us. Can you guess who is singing today? Congrats to Desert Dreamer, Jan Neavill Hersh, and Jaguarwombyn for naming this Teacher!

“When the Japanese mend broken objects, they aggrandize the damage by filling the cracks with gold. They believe that when somethings suffered damage and has a history it becomes more beautiful.” Barbara Bloom

“Damaged people are dangerous. They know they can survive.” Josephine Hart

Starfish, more accurately known as Sea stars, are echinoderms that lack a true centralized brain, but have a complex nervous system. Hard-skinned, bony, spiny, and knobby exteriors protect the vitals of this creature. All echinoderms have a network of interlacing nerves, known as a nerve plexus, which forms a central bundle that generates itself, as well as all additional appendages. This means that if you chop up Sea stars into pieces and throw them back into the ocean, they multiply into separate Stars!

Before Fishermen realized this aspect of our amazing Teacher, they would actually chop and toss them intending to reduce them as rivals! This is the Sea star’s loudest message to us. Through adversity we become stronger. The trick is to keep enough of your core being, (your beliefs, your joys, etc) to continue regenerating after meeting with disaster. Starfish are a stellar reminder to revel in your uniqueness. Sea star people understand the pain that comes with Balance and Wisdom, and the laughter of Otter makes a great balancing energy for Sea star.

Because of their regenerative natures, Sea star may be speaking to you of a Health issue or general need to heal, recover, or simply store energy for future need or growth. Sea stars use their powerful suction cup grips to pry open the shells of mollusks, limpets, oysters, fish or any other prey too slow to respond to this Sea-dwelling carnivore. Once captured, a food source is digested by two separate stomachs. One, the cardiac stomach, envelops the meal outside of the Sea star’s body, and begins digesting it outside of the body.

Then, partially digested, the meal is then retracted into the body with this stomach, and transferred to the pyloric stomach which completes digestion and handles elimination. Some echinoderms have been shown to live for several weeks without food under artificial conditions, and it is believed that they may receive some nutrients from organic material dissolved in seawater!

Plankton is a keystone species in the Sea, and it’s abundance keeps the Sea thriving. This makes it too an important Teacher, and should never be dismissed as unimportant merely because of its tiny body! Sea Star’s ability to feed upon Plankton is a reminder that no matter how minuscule to our perceptions, all that we truly need to survive is provided by the Universe around us. Because of the Sea Star’s ability to digest food outside of its body, it is able to hunt prey that are much larger than its mouth would otherwise allow. This speaks powerfully of Survival and Abundance in our lives, as well as an ability to take ones time, digesting all information before reaching a decision. All are important Sea star lessons.

This powerful regenerative aspect, along with their reproductive methods so similar to the mollusks they feed upon, mark Sea stars as Teachers who reminds us of the importance of a Two-Spirited, and harmonious, approach to life. The term “Two-spirited”, is new to me but highly useful and appropriate. It was derived from interpretations of Native languages used to describe people who displayed both characteristics of male and female.Traditionally, the Two-spirited person was one who had received a gift from the Creator, that gift being the privilege to house both male and female spirits in their bodies.

Thus, such people were gifted with a greater vision, a more balanced view of the world as a whole. Much respected and sought after for their broadened perspectives, Two-spirits were considered a gift to society from Creator. There are many Singers in Nature that teach us the value of Two-spirited beings which is much at odds with the popular opinions of many people today. For a truly balanced perspective in Life, we should nurture, develop and honor all sides of our selves; masculine, feminine and divine. Each has their merits, each has their unique pitfalls and each is inextricably entwined with the others. The sooner we come to terms with this reality, the better off we will all be.

Sea stars are also unique in being one of the only creatures that uses Seawater in its vascular system instead of blood! This indicates a deeper connection with the powerful Waters of the World than even your average Sea dweller already carries, and strengthens the Sea stars abilities as a Healer. Immersion in, activity on, or time spent around Water in general tends to be an enormous healing medium for Sea star people.

Sea star is an excellent Teacher to turn to when we are feeling overwhelmed, or chopped up into little pieces by some traumatic life experience. I tend to view life as a Forge in which we are thrust deep into the fire, removed glowing with our epiphanies, beaten, folded, and pounded into newer wiser shapes continuously. This is not a comfortable process! Anybody who is feeling especially worn by this process should look for ways to connect to this Teacher.

Living and the gaining of Wisdom involve a lot of heart-ache, pain, prodigious efforts on mental, physical, emotional and spiritual levels. Growth does not come easily although it is well worth our efforts. This is the second biggest danger to a Sea star, succumbing to the many and varied toxins one encounters while living! Sea star’s hard endoskeleton is a reminder that it is a sacred duty to protect life, which must begin like all other things, with the self.

Sea stars can be incredibly destructive, but they also have their place within the ecosystem of any reef, another reminder to live in harmony with the World around us. Other than the depredations of pollution, Otters are one of the very few predators of Sea stars. Laughing Otter Wisdom makes a great balance for the hardships so often experienced by Sea star people. So does deep-diving Dolphin, who navigates the deeper waters of life. The Sea star’s very star shape reminds us personal excellence, of the magic of wishing and bringing dreams to life. How do Sea stars appear in your life?

“Life is change. Growth is optional. Choose wisely.” Karen Kaiser Clark

“Nothing is lost upon a person who is bent upon growth; nothing is wasted on one who is always preparing for his work and life by keeping eyes, mind, and heart open to nature, men, books, experience. Such a man finds ministries to his education on all sides; everything cooperates with his passion for growth.” Hamilton Mabie

Deeper,
more sonorous.

Their song
is heard clearly
even over great distance
Vibrant Wisdom
even in our Dreaming.

Closer they come,
Swimming
Dreaming
Singing
until we can feel
their song
in our bones!

“We will teach you
to cross the waters wide,
to sing through your Heart,

Dream deep,
Dream true,
and through
the Ancient memories
of the Cosmos glide!

Nothing
is ever forgotten

for each memory
is like a book,

only waiting for the cover
to be opened and read,

waiting for a willingness
to take the time
to listen,
learn,
look.

Strength and Gentleness
Immense
in equal measures…

Our home the wild
Heart waters of the World,
We will teach you
to be Masters of the flood,
not carried away by it.

Bringing lessons
of artistic creativity
is our sweetest pleasure.

Sing, little siblings!
Sing your Truths
Sing your sorrows and joys
shadows balanced with light
for all the World hears!

Song and sound can heal
like no other gift!
If All Our Relations
sang together,
We might cure the World
of all its noisome fears!

Our smiling faces
may fill your sight,
dancing through
your Dreams
some quiet night
but do not dread
our strength
our size!

See instead
the Wisdom of Ancients

 is all we need
to successfully sustain us.

Listen to the music of Creation
We will teach you our Songs

Who Sings Now?

For those new to the game, each poem is inspired by a Teacher found in Nature; a star, stone, animal, plant etc that holds lessons of Wisdom for us. Can you guess who is singing today? Congrats to Poppy (O.R.M.E.), Sharonlee, Jan Neavill Hersh and Windi (Jaguarwombyn) for naming this Teacher!

“All of us get lost in the darkness, dreamers learn to steer by the stars.” Rush, The Pass

“Don’t gain the world and loose your soul, wisdom is better than silver and gold.” Bob Marley, Zion Train

“If you were all alone in the universe with no one to talk to, no one with which to share the beauty of the stars, to laugh with, to touch, what would be your purpose in life? It is other life, it is love, which gives your life meaning. This is harmony. We must discover the joy of each other, the joy of challenge, the joy of growth.” Mitzi Saotome

“We all love the ocean’s surface with its beautiful sparkle blue. But beneath it, down deeper, whales are moving with slow drifting currents- whales that are great gentle cloudlike beings” Roger Payne

There are over 70 species of Cetaceans which include whales, dolphins, and porpoises. Whales are generally separated into two categories, toothed and baleen. Toothed whales are peg-toothed predators who hunt down schools of fish and squid, and have one blowhole. Baleen whales have a mouthful of bony plates through which they sieve out krill, small fish and other small tasty creatures. Baleens tend to be larger and have two blowholes. Many Cetaceans, especially Baleens, migrate over long distances in groups called pods, although some Cetaceans form groups for life and others interchange members from one pod to the next.

Very social creatures, there is an especially strong bond between mother and calf. Being mammals, whales give birth to live young which must then be guided to the surface to draw their first breath. Gestation time ranges from 9-18 months and a new calf is produced about once every 1-3 years. Young typically stay with their mother for at least a year before setting out on their own, and whales have been known to sing to their young in addition to teaching them life skills. A blue whale calf drinks 50-150 gallons of milk a day, adding about 8 pounds of weight per hour, or 200 pounds a day.

They go from nursing to feeding on krill, and in order to get enough to eat an adult blue whale might eat as many as 40 million of these tiny shrimp in a day! Isn’t it interesting that the largest creature in the world, so large it literally could not exist outside of water, lives by eating creatures less than 1/1000th of their size? Blue whale calves are only nursed for about 8 months while other species nurse longer, like the humpback which nurse their calves for about a year. Perhaps even more interesting is the thought that while whales live out their lives in water, they do not drink! Experts believe that they get all the water they need by burning fat.

There is also a great deal of variation from one species to the next as to how deep they dive or how long they stay submerged. Sperm whales can dive up to 985 feet deep and stay down for over two hours, although a typical dive is usually less than 45 minutes. Blue whales are the largest creature known to us and the largest on record is a female who was about 110 feet long and weighed 209 tons!

When their numbers were higher, one could hear a blue whales song from one pole to the other, but depletion and increasing noise pollution has reduced their audible range. During the feeding period, a blue whale can ingest 4 tons of krill a day. They feed at the beginning and the end of the night at a depth of at least 130 feet. By the 1950’s Blue whales were endangered despite having next to no predators other than man. Pre-whaling numbers are estimated at 350,000, but 99% of blue whales have been killed due to whaling.

Humpbacks, also known as the singing whale, can stay underwater for 30 minutes at a time, although their typical dives are much shorter. Humpbacks emit high frequency “clicks” reaching 30,000 Hz and the males produce sounds in frequencies between 20 and 9,000 Hz. The male humpbacks songs are the longest and most varied in all the animal kingdom with repeated sequences about 15 minutes long. Not only does whale song vary from species to species, it has also been found that whales have their own dialects within a species! These marvelous creatures can be found anywhere in the oceans of the world and are so multi-faceted that they could easily become a lifetime study.

Firstly, Whale carries the Wisdom of Universal Love and Interconnectedness. Whales are complex and sentient beings who will truly benefit when mankind finally realizes and live their daily lives with the concept that we are all connected, we are all One. After their staggering losses to our race, we are lucky that their generous hearts are still willing to share with us their many sage and intuitive lessons. Whales are Record Keepers who carry all the wisdom of the Sea, as well as the memories of Earth and the Cosmos beyond to which we are also all connected. They carry a deep and intuitive link to these Cosmic memories that Whale people will feel upon their very souls.

Music, and healing on any level through sound, is most definitely the province of this Master Singer. Musicians and Singers of all sorts often carry Whale medicine, and perhaps their collective successes and failures exemplify the biggest challenges that a Whale person can face. Most often this seems to boil down to issues of ego. Musicians who become famous and then spiral towards their own extinction are one example. Those who use their fame and success to direct energy towards social goals that will better the conditions of our world are another. However, taking the time to explore Music, what calls to us, how we react to favorite songs and musicians, and examining how it has shaped Humanity is a wonderful way to connect to Whale energy.

While Whale’s main creative link is to the medium of sound, She is by no means limited to only creativity in sound alone.Whale people will find their creative outlet in whatever skills and talents they are able to develop. Grandmother Whale is an emblem of the creative and motherly nurturing forces of the Sea, the heart waters of our world, the symbolic subconscious, turbulent emotions, memories, and dreams. She can inspire a creativity as endless as the Sea itself. Meditative breathing techniques are highly useful to Whale people, and the placement of the blowhole on most whales suggests an importance placed upon the Crown chakra.

This chakra governs our sense of Unity, spiritual connectivity, intuition, Divine wisdom, Enlightenment, Knowledge, understanding and empathy. Poor balance, thought restriction, disorganization, lack of spiritual involvement, fears/obsessions revolving around understanding/compassion, depression, physical problems with the pituitary, pineal, nervous system, or brain are all signs of unbalanced Crown chakra. Violet or white is the stimulating color for this point. Prayer, meditation, the musical note B, are all stimulating to this chakra. Musical exploration, spending time in the Ocean, singing, memory exercises, learning something new especially involving the study of one’s Ancestors, spiritual paths or oral traditions are all excellent ways to connect to Whale energy.

Ambergris is the far more attractive label for a substance that has also been referred to as “whale vomit”. A waxy substance secreted by the sperm whale and found floating at sea or washed ashore, ambergris is highly valued by the perfume industry and has been a coveted trade item for centuries. Known as “floating gold” ambergris found by beachcombers can be worth as much as 4000 dollars. Yet ambergris is simply a secretion produced when a whale has been eating squid and their parrot-like beaks irritate the walls of its innards! This is a blatant reminder to put things in perspective and see things as they really are!

Dreaming is a fine and wonderful aspect of our lives. without it we never would have learned to cross oceans, fly, traverse space, communicate across cultures or a thousand other advancements experienced by society and individuals the world over. We do ourselves, and others, great disservice when we stubbornly refuse to recognize the Truth right in front of us or place inordinate importance on superficial things.

Ambergris, like the Pearl , is an emblem of beauty and perfection that begins with irritation; a reminder of the value of turning the perceived negatives in our lives into positives. Ambergris may be useful, but when all is said and done… it’s still just Whale vomit with only as much value and importance as we place upon it… like so much in life. Maintaining a properly balanced viewpoint while still remaining open to new things is vital, which simply will not work if we are placing too much or not enough importance on any given topic, or if we are unable to see the Truth.

Whales, like other Cetaceans, have a deep connection to Dreaming on all levels and Whale people should definitely strive to keep an active dream journal as well as healthy sleep patterns. Yet, Whales will breach, flinging themselves out of the Sea and into the Air in a dramatic and breathtaking moment to spectators. This is a reminder that we must pull ourselves out of our heady dreams and liquid emotions long enough to attain true thought, conscious intent if we are to direct our lives in a meaningful and progressive manner.

It is also a reminder not to stay isolated within our selves, but to share our selves, joys and sorrows, openly with the World. Whale says that Creativity for its sake alone is not enough. For what purpose do we create? How and what are we manifesting in our lives? Awareness and Action creatively combined for the good of All Our Relations is perhaps the dearest wish of mighty Whale. How does She appear in your life?

Singing Storms to Silence

Singing Storms to Silence

Leaping
Dancing on wave tips
Joyous and Free
Swift Messengers
upon the Waves,
Lo, They come!
Singing of…

“Laughter!”

Glimmering
Blue and Silver with
foaming flowers trailing after

“We will teach you
how to navigate
the Waters of Life
Listen!
Every sound has its meaning.
Map how you move
through this Life.
Feel the answer in your bones,
along your skin
Then you too may Dance
upon the most
Storm-tossed Waves

Heal with Music and Sound
Guide yourself by the echoes
from both
Future
and Past
Breathe…
for Breath is Music
 a Doorway
into the World
where Dreams Abound

With a breath,
a sound
a song
a sigh

Heralds of Poseidon or Bacchus,
We guard that Door
and invite you through
Surrender
we will guide you
in all that you do

Listen!
Soar upon the Deep Silence
the endless
Transformation of Creation
You will find
that your freedom
unconditional love
your healing
have already begun.

Explore the deep Seas
of Empathy and Wisdom
by sailing Dreams
Unfolding and Vast
We will take you to Shores
that you never Dreamt
might break in waves
over your humble Reality
The child within cradled
in Creator's eternal love
Home at last."

“At the height of laughter, the universe is flung into a kaleidoscope of new possibilities. " Jean Houston

“For breath is life, and if you breathe well you will live long on earth.” Sanskrit Proverb

“There is more to life than increasing its speed.” Mahatma Gandhi

Dolphins are Cetaceans, a group of aquatic mammals which includes Whales and Porpoises. Their young are born live underwater, and then guided to the surface by the mother and/or pod members for their first breath. They guide themselves through vast and treacherous waters by song. They leap and glide with agility and joy through the Waters, they play, they laugh and they have even learned some of our language. I’ve always wondered what we might overhear if anyone ever took the time to learn their language!

This adept Teacher will help you improve communication skills whether you want to understand and communicate better with yourself,r someone else, or simply with the World and All Our Relations. This Teacher, being one of the four guardians of Dreamtime, is also a great one for Dreams, and Navigation. If you feel lost at Sea, there are few guides as adept in deep or treacherous waters as the Cetaceans!

Dolphins are gregarious, laughter loving messengers who have been noted throughout our history for their intelligence and many acts of kindness. Countless humans have been rescued from rough waters by Dolphins, and they have even been known to share their knowledge of a good school of fish with fishermen. You can’t get much friendlier than a shared lunch at Sea!

Perhaps the very best time to call upon Dolphin is when we are having difficulty hearing or connecting to the heartbeat of our World which we know intuitively, even when we fight that secret tide within us. When we feel most cut off, most overwhelmed by thoughts and emotions, or out of sync with the World, loyal Dolphin will teach us how to listen to our selves, to others, and the World. Dolphin gently shows us how to navigate our lives back to where we want, and most especially, need to be.

Dolphin is especially concerned with our mental, emotional and spiritual selves. Dreamtime is the perfect way to connect to this Teacher as we are at our most receptive, and potentially our most confident, while asleep. Lucid dreaming and dream journals are especially important to those called by the deep Dreaming Cetaceans, and Dolphin often acts as the Herald of Whale, who carries all of Dolphin’s lessons plus the Wisdom of the Sea. Dolphin may even show up in our dreams as a Herald of another Teacher entirely, as a co-operative effort to get our attention more firmly focused on the message we are about to receive. If Dolphin is the wandering Bard of Life’s Waters, than Whale is the Teacher of Bards and a Master Singer in her own right.

Anyone having difficulty with their sleep patterns, in addition to any medical attention necessary, should take steps to connect to these mighty Healers. Dolphin, Whale, and the beautiful Sea Turtle are three of the most skilled Navigators, most intuitive, nurturing, and creative guides I have ever experienced. The more severe your issues with Sleep and the world of Dreams, the more likely these Teachers are to be of help to you. As always though, approach with Respect and Love when asking any of Our Relations for help. Darting gaily through our deepest inner waters, Dolphin connects us to our own Sub-conscious, latent gifts, and the laughing playfulness of our inner child.

“The dream is the small hidden door in the deepest and most intimate sanctum of the soul, which opens to that primeval cosmic night that was soul long before there was conscious ego and will be soul far beyond what a conscious ego could ever reach.” Carl Jung

Dolphins are air-breathing mammals who live entirely in water. Breath, as one may imagine, is an especially vital topic and unique experience to Cetaceans. Dolphin teaches us to access and manage different aspects of our lives through our use of Breath. Yoga, which teaches us how to breathe properly, and other vocal training are not only recommended by Dolphin, they are highly useful too!

I am thankful that I learned Yoga and began practicing Meditation at such a young age, even though I’m not as consistent or as successful at it now as I was then. To this day, when I am at my most stressed I am likely to turn to these lessons to cope. Whether it takes the form of simply regulating ones breathing, verbal expression, singing, crying, laughing, or taking the time for good music to impact upon you, felt along the the skin as well as within the heart. All of these methods are healing, and have their time and place.

Intuition, like breathing, should be instinctive. One of the easiest, perhaps the most natural way to access or build our intuitive abilities is through Dream work. Ones approach to Dreams is going to be guided by your beliefs, but I do recommend some serious study on the matter of Dreaming in general, and specifically Lucid Dreaming, to those called by any of the Cetaceans.

Any other methods of developing your intuition are going to be wholly defined by your beliefs and choices. You could try something as simple as meditating, guessing “red” or “black” with a deck of cards or similar devices, but ultimately it comes down to being centered and grounded within your self, trusting yourself, paying attention to the World around you, and learning to interpret the many signals you are bombarded with all the time.

More often than not, we need to step back from our busy schedules, and take the time to appreciate simple yet powerful things in our life like Silence, Breath and Sound. As I write this, it is a quiet rainy afternoon and no one else is home besides our three sleeping dogs. Not wanting to clutter up all that beautiful solitude even with lovely music, I took time today to just listen to a summer storm, the gentle snores of the dogs punctuated with dream noises, the interweaving of bird songs with the small daily noises of humanity, and my own breathing.

I quickly grew so calm that Music was a welcome refresher! I certainly didn’t want to surrender one moment of this gorgeous heart-thumping perfection of silence and solitude for the ephemeral delights of Dreaming though. There are many times when I wish I could simply retreat into the woods for a week or two of filling my days up with appreciation for Sun, Wind, Silence and Solitude, and my nights with Dreaming, as I find it very rejuvenating.

Dolphins are amazingly sensitive and intelligent creatures. There are many programs now that provide therapy time between Dolphins and certain individuals like Autistic children, Downs syndrome, depression, and cancer patients, that have met with great success. There have actually been cases too of a family with no particular issues participating in some sort of “dolphin swim” only to find that the experience brought about some pretty amazing results. I find it fascinating, for example, that Dolphins have spontaneously alerted unsuspecting people to tumors or other life-threatening medical conditions.

Being masters in detection through the use of sound, Dolphins can tell if a woman is pregnant, if a bone was broken in previous years, or if a person needs special care and attention due to some other condition like arrested mental development. In fact, researchers likely do not fully understand yet all that a Dolphin “reads” from us or even affects us when we slide into the water next to them and they examine us with their echolocation organ, the melon, located within their heads. Nor are we capable, yet, of asking and communicating directly with the dolphins although it has been proven that they have a complex language of their own.

What we can do is observe and draw conclusions. When, for example, an Autistic child is put into the water with Dolphins, he or she is examined by the dolphins both physically and with their melon, and then any observer can see how gently the dolphins instantly begin to interact with the child. There are around 40 species of Dolphins alone, within the Cetacean family. Such behavior coupled with the countless accounts of spontaneous dolphin kindness, aid during dangerous conditions, and general friendliness make it impossible for me to deny their status as sentient beings. Perhaps it is their very complexity that promotes Dolphins as symbols of freedom, creativity, the constant changes experienced throughout a lifetime, the thirst for learning, and most importantly the ability to meet adversity with a cheerful and willing heart.

Just as there is no life for us without breath, there is no spiritual evolution nor creativity without adversity. Humanity has butchered hundreds of Dolphins either purposefully or through disregard and carelessness. Yet, they do not seem to hold that against an individual in need who happens across their path. Wild or contained by human care, Dolphins are amazing Teachers with a tremendous amount of generosity and kindness. Perhaps my favorite lesson from Dolphin is deceptively simple.

Dolphins show us that Life is filled with dangers and hardships, but we won’t gain any happiness by dwelling on these aspects. We must be willing to let go of our baggage and our conception of “time usefully employed”, and begin simply to accept that sometimes doing nothing but enjoying the moment we are in, engaging enthusiastically in some form of play, simply to be is all that is really required of us. No matter the severity of the hardships we are facing, when we maintain calm, happy and loving demeanor (even if we don’t particularly feel those emotions at the time) we are lessening the hardships we face, and lightening the burdens of those around us as well.

Sometimes, even though nothing tangible has been achieved, this aspect of Dolphin wisdom may be all that can carry us through the worst in life. No one can make us feel anything, good or bad, without our consent. It’s not always easy to accept this truth, but that doesn’t make it less true. When someone has wronged us, of course we are going to feel hurt and angered. That does not mean we have to act out of hurt or anger though.

It is always far better to allow such destructive emotions to be expressed and then set aside before we make any decisions or take any actions. This will take time, awareness, patience, many failures and a great deal of compassion for others and for our selves. The gentle song of the Dolphin can help guide us back to a more caring and wiser course. We cannot ask for a better example to follow, than these kind finned cousins. What a marvelous World it might be when we finally begin to learn from and truly interact with All Our Relations.

Although Dolphins do not have any olfactory nerves or lobes and are believed to posses no sense of smell, they do have acute hearing, excellent vision, sensitive touch, streamlined bodies built for speed in water, and their ability to echo-locate to act as tools to their intellect. They are capable of learning some complex and amazing routines, and have even been known to protect human swimmers from sharks by keeping the swimmer within their circle.

Social creatures, they travel in pods of up to a dozen individuals and have been known to teach their young how to use tools! Off of the coast of Australia, researchers discovered dolphins who broke off sponges and then used them to protect their snouts while they foraged for food. This knowledge was being passed from mother to daughter, and researchers are not sure yet why the males seem unable to adopt this skill. Dolphin people also tend to be sensitive, physically and metaphysically, to their surroundings. While this can be a tremendous asset, it can also drive you crazy if you don’t recognize the signals you are receiving.
For example, if a sensitive Dolphin person enters a room filled with family members who are fighting with each other, it is impossible for them not to feel all those destructive emotions whatever they might be; fear, anger, resentment, despair, etc. The trick then is to recognize that these emotions are not yours, and having achieved that awareness to then make the best decisions possible based upon sound reasoning and a compassionate heart regardless of what others in the situation may feel, say, or do.
To take it a step further, Dolphin recognizes that we are All family even if we aren’t all lucky enough to be finned and playful like the Cetaceans. To treat all the World, not just blood family nor humans alone as if they deserve consideration, respect, love and kindness is no easy task in life either. It takes a great deal of courage to be that open to the World, to potential hurt, for you cannot be an individual capable of such generous true emotion without feeling the many hurts and ills of the World around you.

Healing, Change, Unconditional Love and Universal Harmony, Wisdom, Creativity, Compassion, Sensitivity, Spiritual Insight, Balance, Freedom, the importance of Sound and the expression of Joy are all Dolphin lessons. These fascinating Creature Teachers have a truly astounding wealth of wisdom to impart to us. Dolphins and Whales were one of the first Creature Teachers that captivated me, and I continue to learn from them in unexpected ways as the years pass.
Dolphins appear in our literature, films, and other cultural expressions.

My particular favorite is Diane Duane’s marvelous book, Deep Wizardry, and I highly recommend it as an excellent way to stir your own connections to the Sea, Dolphins, Whales, and Sharks. I hope someday to experience swimming with the Dolphins myself, but I cannot recommend connecting to these Teachers too often, however you can and in whatever way available to you. How does the empathetic Dolphin appear in your life?

“You may seek companionship and warmth, for example, but if your unconscious intention is to keep people at a distance, the experiences of separation and pain will surface again and again until you come to understand that you, yourself, are creating them. Eventually, you will choose to create harmony and love. You will choose to draw to you the highest-frequency currents that each situation has to offer. Eventually, you will come to understanding that love heals everything, and love is all there is.

The journey may take many lifetimes, but you will complete it. It is impossible not to complete it. It is not a question of if but of when. Every situation that you create serves this purpose. Every experience that you encounter serves this purpose. " Gary Zukav “The Seat of the Soul”

“If you can spend a perfectly useless afternoon in a perfectly useless manner, you have learned how to live.” Lin Yutang
